Yesterday the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation opened at the American Museum of Natural History. It's certainly a striking building, with an organic feel to it. It smells of fresh concrete and has great natural light. The leaf-cutter ants are fun to watch, but so far it mostly feels like an empty space. The initial impression is one of awe, but as soon as you walk in the door, security guards guide you around the corner to the ticket desk, thus depriving visitors of a grand entrance. That's a shame because the visitor could feel themselves in a cathedral of worship of the natural world in the loft atrium, reminiscent of the inside of a hive or ant colony.
