Here is a quick project. I needed an app for my Smart Car's new handsfree system. Not wanting to have a separate systems for GPS, handsfree etc, I am consolidating them all to my phone.

A new headunit has been installed in the Smart. This includes a bluetooth handsfree service. I created a simple service on the phone to listen for the connection of the headunit to the phone via bluetooth. When this connection is made it phone launches my little app. It is super simple offering just 4 main functions.

All I need are navigation (replaces a separate GPS unit).
2 Speed dial numbers.
Browse contacts.

All calls are routed to the handsfree service on the headunit.

All text messages are read out using the text to speech service on the phone. Also any txt messages are auto responded to with a message "I am driving at the moment, if it is urgent please call as I am on handsfree" Just for convenience :-)

The app was put together in an evening at my local hackspace (BuildBrighton) using the MIT App Inventor, and the graphics were knocked up in PhotoShop.

Yes there are loads of car docks on the market, but I wanted something more bespoke and custom to the car :-)
