Set in Burleigh Heads on Queensland’s Gold Coast, this episode follows Dallas and Nick, a young family with three kids and one extraordinary location. Their home boasts rare ocean, city, and bush views, but the house itself — a three-bedroom 1970s build — is no longer keeping up with their growing family or modern living needs.

With a dated layout, limited space, poor thermal performance, and growing energy bills, the couple faces a tough choice:

Do they renovate the existing house, or knock it down and rebuild to better suit the site?

Hosted by James Treble, Renovate or Rebuild brings together two expert teams:

Team Renovate, focused on reworking the existing structure and minimising waste

Team Rebuild, proposing a brand-new home designed to maximise views, comfort, and performance

Across the episode, both teams present detailed designs that consider:

Family-friendly layouts and indoor–outdoor living

Natural ventilation and passive cooling for Queensland conditions

Solar power, energy efficiency, and long-term running costs

Budget constraints versus long-term value

Judged by a panel of industry experts, the designs are scored — but ultimately, the final decision rests with the homeowners.

This episode sets the foundation for everything that follows in Season 1: real families, real budgets, and one question that every homeowner eventually faces.

About Renovate or Rebuild

Do you love the area you live in but your home is a little tired and you are in need of more space? You want a home that is healthy, efficient, comfortable, and stylish but you are not sure if it is better to renovate or rebuild your home.

Renovate or Rebuild is about answering the question - should I renovate or rebuild my home?

The program is based around a family who love where they live but need some more space to grow. They want a home that is healthy, energy efficient, with solar power and home energy storage, facilities for an electric vehicle, and the best home design.

Two teams then compete to come up with the best home design for the family using concepts like passive solar design, architectural design, best home design ideas, amazing kitchen design ideas, amazing bathroom design ideas, the latest interior design ideas, and how to design a solar power system for your home including a home battery storage system.

Team Renovate need to come up with the best solution for the family with the best renovation ideas, considerations for bathroom renovations, the renovation costs, kitchen renovations, home improvement ideas, as well as how to make best use of the existing building materials to create a home that is energy efficient, and can use solar power and home battery energy storage to provide all of its energy needs. To achieve this they will need to consider the passive solar design of the home, the use of energy efficient appliances and of course they need to understand how to create a budget for a renovation, how much renovations cost, and how to renovate a home.

Team Rebuild believe that the only way to save this home is to knock it down and rebuild a new home. They will need to come up with a winning home design to create the best new home for the family by considering the best orientation of the home, passive solar design, the selection of energy efficient appliances, and how to create a home that produces all of its own power with a home solar and battery system. They will also need to understand how much it costs to knockdown and rebuild a home as they come up with the best home design ideas including kitchen designs ideas, bathroom design ideas, access to natural light and ventilation.
