I've mentioned Stoicism on this channel a few times, but what is it, exactly - and why should you care? Stoicism is a very simple philosophy of life that is just as practical and applicable now as it was thousands of years ago. Proponents of Stoicism include Tim Ferriss and Ryan Holiday, who have brought this ancient philosophy into the modern-day mainstream. In this video, I'll tell you why I study Stoicism, how it's helped me, and how you can apply it in your daily life. Stoicism is especially helpful for entrepreneurs, travelers, and digital nomads.
Pillars of Stoicism:
Objective judgment, now at this very moment.
Unselfish action, now at this very moment.
Willing acceptance—now at this very moment—of all external events.
That’s all you need.
—MARCUS AURELIUS (the former emperor of the Roman Empire, and my favorite Stoic)
Ryan Holiday of The Daily Stoic and the book, The Obstacle is the Way, writes: Stoicism has just a few central teachings:
It sets out to remind us of how unpredictable the world can be.
How brief our moment of life is.
How to be steadfast, and strong, and in control of yourself.
And finally, that the source of our dissatisfaction lies in our impulsive dependency on our reflexive senses rather than logic.
Stoicism differs from most existing schools in one important sense: its purpose is practical application. It is not an intellectual enterprise. It’s a tool that we can use to become better entrepreneurs, better friends and better people.
Stoic writing isn’t about beating up on yourself or pointing out the negative. It’s a meditative technique that transforms negative emotions into a sense of calm and perspective. It’s preparation for the philosophic life – an action – where the right state of mind is the most critical part.
Three Exercises:
1. Practice misfortune
2. Train your perception to avoid good and bad
3. Remember - it’s all ephemeral: remember how small you are
Entrepreneurs, digital nomads, and travelers:
Practicing misfortune makes you stronger in the face of adversity
Learning to turn obstacles into opportunities
