Windows SDR Content Slider (HDR Settings Guide)
Ok so you’ve enabled HDR in Windows and HUUUH, what in the name of all that is holy is this.

SDR content slider in HDR how is it possible, and what does it do?

Well as you can imagine just because you refinanced your house to afford that new HDR monitor, not all content is HDR, and even if your using HDR in Windows, well unfortunately most content will still be sRGB outside of games and movies.

For that reason we have this slider in Windows.

Now look, I’ll be honest this slider is an absolute nightmare created by maniacs, so i’ll try and keep this as simple as I can, but bear with me.

You would think that this would be a simple slider where each number increase is equal to 1 nit of brightness allowing users to go from 50 to 4000 or something like that, but oh my sweet child this is Microsoft we're talking about, so of course it has to be as complex as humanly possible.

No.

This is a slider that goes from 0-100 with 100 equaling 500nits of SDR brightness. Sound confusing, well that's because it is, but wait there's more.

To get the quote unquote “correct” max brightness you have to take the max full screen brightness of your monitor -80 /4.2.

Why?

Let’s not get into it, because again this slider was created by absolute psychopaths.

But for example lets say you have an OLED that does 280 nits full screen.

Well you take 280 - 80 / 4.2.

That gives you roughly 48% on the slider and will allow you to avoid clipping when using auto HDR in Windows.

Now of course if you want you can set this slider to whatever you want, especially if you find SDR to be too bright, but at least now you know how it works.
