Die Kleinstadt mit der historischen Zollfeste gilt als eine der besterhaltenen spätmittelalterlichen Stadtanlagen am Niederrhein und gehört auch vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bereits zu den beliebtesten Ausflugsorten rund um Köln. Die auffällige Beflaggung steht möglicherweise im Zusammenhang mit dem 1. Mai, seit 1933 als "Feiertag des Deutschen Volkes" gesetzlicher Feiertag. From the archive of the Cologne Film Heritage Foundation: A trip by the Cologne amateur filmmaker Wilhelm Pick to Zons north of Cologne. The small town with the historic customs fortress is one of the best-preserved late medieval towns on the Lower Rhine and was one of the most popular excursion destinations around Cologne even before the Second World War.
