Viral, a video reflection for this 2020 year of a global pandemic rollercoaster! It's been twelve months since Covid 19 was officially noted by the WHO as a world wide an emergency, can you believe it?!
For many, this time has meant great loss - of health, of lives, of jobs, of businesses, of income. What does that really mean and how does it manifest? At its core, this is a loss of security, stimulation and connection and we feel it as anxiety, stress, fear and depression.
Long distance relationships are the new normal, with not only lovers but friends and family. Six feet apart has meant an absence of touch and affection, critical human needs. Masks hide smiles and camera lenses don't allow for eye contact. Loneliness is at an all time high and suicide is all too common.
Having said that, others have experienced more during these months. More space, more time, more financial support. More boredom means reaching for more food, alcohol, drugs etc. It means overdosing on Netflix and social media. Staying at home with a house full of people has gifted more intimacy but also stronger agitations. It’s been a process, and many of us are still figuring it out as this viral threat continues.
This pandemic has been granted historical status because, regardless of your location, ethnicity or financial position, it has affected you.
2020 has been monumental in the ways we've seen race issues exposed in America. The Black Lives Matter movement has been met with the most support it has ever seen - protests, petitions and campaigns to incite actual change like never before. People are angry, but people have been galvanized. We’re seeing the truth and acting, and that is worth celebrating.
It has been monumental for the uncovering of failures as well. We can see now more than ever, fissures within our government - a system seen previously by many as reliable, or at least, not worth questioning. Despite needing to wait hours to do so, the number of citizens who voted in the 2020 presidential election was staggering when you compare it to statistics from years prior. People want change - they are claiming their right to have a say and be heard. For as many people who were pro-change, there were too their counterparts. Rivalries between political parties in the American people was embarrassing and unfortunately all too violent this year. It seems as though each side was only yelling louder and louder, incendiary comments only exasperated by news media, Facebook and Twitter.
For anyone who can choose consciousness, this year has been a learning experience - on a personal level and a community level. We’ve certainly learned about what we previously taking for granted. What are your takeaways?
