Twenty years after the invasion of Iraq by the U.S. and Britain, Baghdad is a very different place.

The waves of sectarian violence and bomb attacks that bedevilled Iraq's capital even until a few years ago are all but gone. In its place there is a thriving metropolis with pleasure boat rides on the Tigris, restaurants, and people having barbecues in its many green parks.

Yet the country remains hobbled by intractable factional politics, suffocating corruption and great poverty despite its huge oil wealth.
