A Short History of Cinderellas of Color and How Brandy Did It Better

The release of 2021's Cinderella starring Camila Cabello got me thinking about my favorite Cinderella movie, 1997's Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella starring Brandy. At the time of recording, I hadn't seen the Cabello version (it's not very good) but based on the trailer, I was not optimistic about its quality, nor its cultural relevance. In this video, I break down why I think 2021's Cinderella fails to do anything particularly daring with the story, with the exception of the "genderless" fairy godmother played by Billy Porter. And I also discover a hidden gem in Cindy, the original Black Cinderella.
