As climate change begins to impact the world, there is an urgent need for countries to make plans to adapt.

In line with the Paris Agreement, many countries have plans in place to prepare for the risks of climate change. However, research by Dr Timo Leiter, found that 60% of these countries are not tracking the implementation and effect of these plans, creating a false sense of progress.

In 2022, the United Nations (UN) began the development of a global policy framework for climate adaptation. Dr Leiter co-facilitated workshops to develop this framework so that countries have clear guidance on how to address climate impacts. This includes a target, based on his research, for monitoring and evaluation of the plans.

Dr Timo Leiter, London School of Economics and Political Science, is shortlisted for the ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize 2024. The Prize, now in its 12th year, is an opportunity to recognise the success of ESRC-funded researchers in achieving and enabling outstanding economic or societal impact from their research.
