On Feb. 14, 1962, first lady Jacqueline Kennedy gave the first broadcast tour of the White House, offering the public a glimpse of the historic home that had just undergone a $2 million restoration project. In the CBS News Special with CBS News reporter Charles Collingwood, Kennedy narrated a brief history of the White House, taking audiences from the home’s original construction that started in 1792 through its various iterations, rebuilds and former inhabitants. Most estimates show that the hour-long broadcast was viewed by 80 million people. Kennedy also won an Emmy for her performance in the special.
