Explore the Medieval Old Town of Tallinn, Estonia - Walk to Town Hall Square & 14th Century Castles

Step into the past with the gem of the Baltic Sea, Tallinn. The capital city of Estonia, walking the streets of Old Town in Tallinn is like a step back in time. With records indicating human population as far back as 5,000 years, it grew into one of the most significant medieval ports for trade during the 14th-16th centuries. In fact, it's Old Town is one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in Europe with a myriad of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Given it's long standing status as a port city, Tallinn is a common port of call for several cruise lines sailing around the Scandinavian countries of northern Europe. We visited while on board Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas, but opted not to pay for any of the shore excursion tours. The port is approximately a 15-minute walk from the city itself, with the route well marked. You won't get lost... at least not until you're in the narrow streets of Old Town, which is where we spend most of this walking tour. If you've got GPS, you'll be fine though. We recorded the walk back to port at the tail end of this video, so you can see for yourself.

Just walking the streets is interesting, with most tours you purchase already going where you'd be wandering (outside of Old Town is another story). Town Hall Square is one of the common locations visited, as well as churches, cathedrals, and castle towers. Even exploring randomly, they're around every corner. All that said, it is a lot of walking on mostly uneven, cobblestone roads, with a number of hills surround certain castles. You will get tired. Though it's all tourist prices, there's plenty of seating at the dozens of restaurants and cafes at Town Hall Square.
