Arbitrary detention for religious reasons is often accompanied by other grave violations, such as torture, discrimination, and denial of due process. Families are torn apart, communities are shattered, and individuals suffer immeasurably.
During this side event, we want to highlight the cases of specific individuals who authorities have imprisoned, for sometimes decades, for exercising their freedom of thought, conscience, religion and belief; and also want to address the implications these detentions and the practice of arbitrary detention have on the society as a whole, with the goal of eliminating this practice.
