Xiang Liu is scared to be just a replacement for Tushan Jing and has so many more reasons, so he doesn't confess his feelings. But he still loves Xiao Yao, so he keeps hoping for something, anything, despite all odds. However, he sees how much more affection and attention Xiao Yao gives Tushan Jing and he cannot help, but wonder, why?

In the novel and partially in the drama, it is shown very clearly, that Xiang Liu is ashamed of his true self, especially of his true form of the nine-headed snake. Knowing this, we can guess, that Xiao Yaos' words about "not the type to be in the girls dreams" hit so much differently than just complaints about the way XL acts.

But we also have the answer to the question of the song. If Xiang Liu would confess his feelings and was able to get rid of his burdens, debts and duties - Xiao Yao would accept him.
