Correctly Engage Your Abs

This is a question that I get asked a lot since I love to pick apart the details on exercise form. What is the best way to work your abs? Or the correct way to contract your abs? ⁣

Like most things in the exercise world, it comes down to what your goal is with any particular exercise or approach. Do you have something in particular that you want to strengthen? Maybe an imbalance you’re hoping to even out? ⁣

I’ve seen people with rectus weakness and TAs that are far too strong. I’ve also seen people with really strong rectus muscles and weak TAs. Internal oblique dominance and external oblique dominance. It literally runs the gamut. ⁣

The thing I like to focus on the most is not “the best exercise” so to speak but the intention you go into any exercise with. If you always dominate with your external obliques, then no matter what exercise you do, those EOs will probably run the show. ⁣

So focus your intention or how you go into the exercise to get the results that you’re looking for. ⁣
