A severe storm caused by Cyclone Dana has hit Catalonia, causing catastrophic flooding and destruction in coastal and mountainous areas. According to the Spanish National Meteorological Agency (Aemet), a red alert has been issued for the region. The Catalan meteorological service Meteocat has also warned of a "serious threat" due to heavy rainfall.
The situation is particularly critical in the Baix Llobregat area and its surroundings, where civil protection has declared "maximum danger" due to intense rainfall. The rains have already caused flooding and serious damage to infrastructure. Local residents are posting videos on social media showing how torrents of water are flooding streets and roads, turning them into raging rivers. Car traffic in the affected areas is almost paralyzed.
Colossal amounts of rainfall have been recorded on the Barcelona coast - up to 180 liters per square meter in 12 hours. One of the busiest transport corridors, the C-32 motorway between Castelldefels and Sant Boi de Llobregat, is currently closed due to flooding. The Catalan Transport Service (SCT) urges people to avoid travel to the disaster area and follow the instructions of local authorities.
The province of Tarragona, which remains under the "orange" alert level, has already received 110 liters of rain per square meter. At Barcelona International Airport, the situation continues to worsen. Thunderstorms have caused leaks in the terminals and flooding has occurred in some areas. Terminal T1 and the parking area were the most affected. The runway was also under water. The airport remains on high alert, and airport staff are working to eliminate the consequences of the disaster.
The Catalan authorities urge residents and visitors to the region to take safety measures and minimize movement. In order to protect the population, civil protection recommends staying at home and closely monitoring information published by official sources. Forecasters warn that the cyclone will continue to pose a threat to large parts of Spain and ask the population to exercise extreme caution and be prepared for possible evacuations.
