The town of Paete in Laguna was an agricultural region before it became famous known as an artist village. Carvers, painters, sculptors and other artisans produce exquisite arts made of wood, papier-mache, clay and other indigenous materials found abundantly in its mountainside and lakeshores.

As farmers of old, the Paeteños concentrated in rice culture, tilling the soil from morn to dusk whenever they found time to break from the drudgery of their daily chores the come together to celebrate a bit, entertaining themselves and others. Vignettes of work and occupation are popular subjects for entertainment.

Before the introduction of the mill or molino, the Paeteños harvested palay with their hands and threshed them with their feet. Another method of threshing was to strike bundles of palay in a flat stone to separate grain from shaft. Not alone were these methods tedious but also time consuming.

The arrival of the molino moved the Paeteños farmers several steps ahead in their farming technology giving them the luxury to socialize and participate in happy communal activities. Groups would gather to catch up on the latest events, drink and probably sing and dance. These customary evening socials produced extemporaneous dances rooted on the interpretation of farming activities. Even the mills' grinding parts were not spared from the artistic eyes of the creative farmers and soon fast twirls and turns representing the mill dominated the molinero dance. And like a fatigued mill the dance grinds to a slow finish.
