There is a legend connected to this song. In 1941, Johnny Mercer began an affair with 19-year-old Judy Garland. At the time, Garland was also seeing composer David Rose and eventually ended her involvement with Mercer when she became engaged to Rose. The day after her wedding, Mercer gave all his rights to I REMEMBER YOU to Garland as a wedding gift.

Mercer and Garland remained lifelong friends, and toward the end of his life, Mercer stated that he was still in love with Garland.

Think of that as Tonia caresses these poignant and prophetic words:
when my life is through,
and the angels ask me to recall the thrill of it all,
then I will tell them,
I remember you.

Eydie Gorme’s version on Mark Sendroff’s beautiful album “Mostly Mercer” has always been my favorite. Now I have two.

I REMEMBER YOU was published in 1941 and recorded by Jimmy Dorsey. In 1942 it appeared in the film THE FLEET’S IN, sung by Dorothy Lamour accompanied by Dorsey.
