Dogs vary in so many ways from their shape, size, colour, and coat. While certain breeds have commonalities in terms of their appearance, that’s not to say they don’t have a personality of their own. And any pet owner will likely agree, irrespective of the breed.

The practice of breeding, however, often results in potential health issues. That’s not to say you should stay away from popular dog breeds, rather it’s about identifying any problem areas and treating them accordingly.

With the right high-quality food, exercise, love and care your dog is sure to live a long and happy life no matter the breed.

Below are 10 common dog breeds and their potential health issues:

Labradors

Under-exercised Labs are prone to weight gain and joint issues. They’re also genetically prone to hip and elbow dysplasia.

German Shepherds

Hereditary dysplasia: a deformation of the hip socket that may lead to arthritis or lameness.

Basset Hounds

Droopy skin may interfere with vision, floppy ears are prone to infections, and they can suffer from intervertebral disc disease.

Jack Russell Terriers

Inherited diseases include lens luxation, which may result in loss of vision.

Yorkshire Terriers

Prone to digestive problems, and hereditary portosystemic shunt that may decrease liver function and cause toxins to accumulate in the blood.

Dalmatians

A hereditary defect in this breed is deafness, and they have a tendency to develop kidney or bladder stones.

Cocker Spaniels

Susceptible to eye disorders, heart disease, epilepsy, liver disease, and ear infections.

Pugs

A flat face can lead to breathing problems. Pugs are also known to gain weight if they don’t exercise regularly.

Chihuahuas

The most common is patellar luxation which can lead to arthritis. Other medical concerns include cardiac and eye disease.

Boxers

Prone to heart-related and thyroid problems, as well as skin allergies. Other medical concerns include cancer and elbow dysplasia.

Despite the potential of health issues, you’ll find that these breeds come with a myriad of exceptional qualities that make them so unique.

While disorders are treatable it’s good to know what you’re in for beforehand. Don’t purchase a dog without proper documentation that clears them of health problems. When adopting, take your pooch to the vet for a check-up immediately.
