In this short clip I talk about a very important topic in BJJ that deals with competition and that’s slowing things down when you’ve gained your lead. This is a concept that took me a long time to understand because at the lower belt level I always wanted to be exciting and push the pace and be flashy. However during competition that led to a lot of lost positions, and me getting caught in submissions that wouldn’t have happened had I not been so hasty to show out.

Now I am much more strategic with my approach to competition. I pick my timing to press the advantage but when I score I play to the clock. This forces my opponent to feel the pressure of not only the technique I have them in, but also the time and the points. It’s now on them to make a move and in that desperation to make something happen or face losing is when I pick my time to advance.

Remember the old adage slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Don’t rush when you have the lead. Let your opponents mistakes give you the advantage you need to advance.
