Joshua Lederberg, who won the Nobel prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1958 had said “ The future of humanity and microbes likely will unfold as episodes of a suspense thriller that could be titled Our Wits Versus Their Genes”. The warfare between humans and microbes has been ongoing for centuries. Intense outbreaks in the form of epidemics and pandemics have been reported even in ancient texts. As we live through the 3rd year of the ongoing viral pandemic, it is necessary to reflect on the structure and function of viruses which make them such lethal nanomachines capable of halting all human activities and causing major damage. Viruses are essentially smart containers that are extremely efficient in delivering their genetic material to host cells for rapid production of new viruses. This requires that viruses be stable enough in the outside environment to protect and transport the genetic material, flexible enough to get inside host cells and cunning enough to evade our immune system. Viruses are capable of rapid evolution, which makes them formidable nano-adversaries. The human response, in the form of development of strategies for prevention and treatment, comes up against the natural selection of viral strains more capable of dissemination. In this talk, the salient points in virus-host interaction at the molecular or nano-level will be discussed.
