MOMBASA, August 1969 - President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, and President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania attended the commissioning of M.V. Mulungushi, the third vessel in the East African Shipping Line fleet.

The new freighter was welcomed with traditional maritime ceremonies. M.V. Mulungushi's name was chosen to honor a historic location in Zambia. The vessel's commissioning marked the continued expansion of regional maritime cooperation.

A distinct national identity was assigned to each ship in the fleet. The first vessel, launched in 1967, was given Kenya's national colors. Uganda's flag was bestowed upon the second ship. The newly commissioned M.V. Mulungushi was designated to sail under Zambian colors.

Fleet expansion plans were revealed during the ceremony. A fourth vessel was under construction at international shipyards. This upcoming addition was designated to carry Tanzania's flag, with delivery expected the following year.

The East African Shipping Line was created as an extension of the East African Community (EAC). Maritime operations were integrated into the Community's economic framework. Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania were united through this shared maritime enterprise.

Zambia's entry into the Community was under advanced discussion. The negotiations were focused on full membership status. The commissioning ceremony was interpreted as a practical step toward expanded regional cooperation.
