My SLOWWORM had BABIES!!! Anguis fragilis UK HERPING

My Slowworm (Anguis fragilis) gave birth to 10 tiny Babies - UK Herping. I rescued a Slowworm a few weeks back from a lawnmower & it was clearly not just fat but pregnant/gravid. I made the decision not to just release it instantly in case it was eaten by a cat, crow or Magpie or got run over by a lawnmower before having the chance to give birth. I have kept her for a few weeks now, feeding her on mealworms dusted with Nutrobal (a vitamin/mineral supplement) & small white slugs (their favourite food). I will only keep her for a few more days to fatten her up a bit & get her strength back a bit before I release her in the safest part of my garden. I will then wait another day or two & release all the babies - they look so small & vulnerable but they are also good at hiding in tiny places & escaping into the smallest of holes! It was great to be able to do this video in the hope of showing people how sweet this species is - I especially wanted to show those with a fear of snakes that they have nothing at all to worry about when it comes to slowworms - they are an absolute joy to have as a garden resident. Laying down areas of plastic sheeting, corrugated iron, plywood, flat paving slabs or slates etc & having an area used as a compost heap will all help to provide perfect hiding places/homes for slowworms. Leaving parts of your lawn long (edges/areas at the back of your garden etc) also helps to provide cover/protection for these reptiles which are vulnerable to cats & birds. Finally, just keeping an eye out when you mow your lawn will help prevent accidentally chopping one in half.
