Garoto - Sinal dos Tempos (performed by Sophie Marcheff)

Anibal Augusto Sardinha (1915-1955) known as “Garoto,” was a Brazilian guitarist-composer. Garoto began his career at the age of 12 playing banjo and was later invited to work for several radio stations playing guitar, mandolin, banjo, cavaquinho and Brazilian tenor guitar. In 1939 Garoto toured the US where he was introduced to many jazz musicians, and where he played on a Broadway Revue and in a Fox Film. He returned to Rio de Janeiro in 1940 and performed on radio stations. Sinal dos Tempos is indicative of Garoto’s late style, with jazz-influenced harmonies, and rhythms that signify elements of the bossa-nova style which would receive international acclaim in the 1960s.
