How to set screen resolution using xrandr

1. open console/terminal

2. type cvt and your desired resolution in my case
it is 1600x900 so type command
$ cvt 1600 900

3. the output of the command copy
from "1600x900 to +vsync

there is no listing of my desktop resolution so I will add it

4. $ xrandr --newmode "1600x900_60.00" 118.25 1600 1696 1856 2112 900 903 908 934 -hsync +vsync

this will tell system to configure new mode

5. now we have to add this to our system so in terminal type

xrandr --addmode VGA1 1600x900_60.00

(VGA1 is my display name as in xrandr )

6. terminal had added this resolution to system check it by simply typing xrandr

7. now type
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1600x900_60.00

8.Now display has got our desired/actual monitor resolution
