Climate: Black turmeric thrives in a warm, humid climate with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 45°C.
Soil: It grows best in a well-drained sandy or clay loam soil.
Water: Avoid water stagnation in the field. Black turmeric does not require extensive irrigation, as its needs are often met by rainfall.
Land preparation
Plowing: Prepare the land by plowing it 2-4 times to make the soil brittle.
Manure: Mix about 20 tons of cow dung manure per hectare into the soil before plowing.
Drainage: Ensure good drainage arrangements are in place.
Sowing and planting
When to sow: The best time to plant is during the monsoon or summer season, preferably from April to May.
Seed treatment: Before sowing, immerse the rhizomes in a 2% babistston solution for about 20 minutes to prevent soil-borne diseases.
Planting method: Plant the rhizome pieces 5-10 cm deep in the soil.
Spacing: Sow the pieces at a distance of 20 cm from plant to plant and 30 cm between rows.
Quantity: You will need approximately 15-20 quintals of rhizomes per hectare for planting.
Aftercare
Mulching: After planting, mulch the land with green leaves at a rate of 12-15 tons per hectare. This can be repeated after about 50 days.
Weeding: Weeding should be done periodically to ensure good growth.
Fertilizing: A liquid fertilizer can be applied during the growing season if needed.
Harvesting and post-harvest
Harvesting time: The crop is ready to be harvested in about 8 to 8.5 months, typically from December to January.
Harvesting: Carefully dig up the rhizomes and clean them without damaging them.
Drying: Dry the rhizomes in a shady, dry place. Cut the good-quality rhizomes into 2-4 cm pieces and dry them until they harden.
Pests and diseases
Black turmeric is generally not affected by pests and diseases, so no insecticides are typically required.
