Historically, F. H. Bradley's logic has been claimed by both coherence and identity theorists. However, by taking seriously Bradley’s metaphysical work, which many commentators attempt to separate from the logical work, Woodard argues that the very form of transcendental logic, as Bradley reads it, cannot be separated from metaphysics given the explanatory role he gives to appearance. Woodard argues for an affinity between Bradley's metaphysical system and that of Wilfrid Sellars. While both Sellars and Bradley attach the capacities of logic to sense, the role of feeling in Bradley as leading towards a collective practice complicates the status of transcendental psychology to which Sellars adheres.


Ben Woodard is currently a research fellow at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry in Berlin, Germany. His work focuses on the relationship between naturalism and idealism in the long 19th century. His fourth monograph Uninhabited: Science Fiction and the Decolonial will be published in 2023 by Zero Books.
