13 years of China-Greece partnership under BRI elevates Port of Piraeus to 29th in global ranking

Since China's COSCO Shipping’s took over of Greece's largest but ailing Port of Piraeus 13 years ago, old facilities and route were updated under modernized management.

In just a decade, Piraeus evolved into the largest port in the Mediterranean, the fourth-largest in Europe, and one of the fastest-growing container ports globally.

Its role of transportation hub is highlighted via local government’s efforts to set up a subway line from the heart of the city all the way to the port.

In terms of traditional container business, Piraeus's operating capacity has increased from 685,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) to over 5 million TEUs today, making it one of the largest container ports in the eastern Mediterranean region.

Containers filled with China-branded cars at the crossroads of Asia, Europe and Africa are carefully unpacked and ready to be transported to other European countries via the China-Europe Land-Sea Express Route.

It cuts transportation time by 7 to 10 days compared to the traditional Gibraltar route, making Piraeus a key hub for China-Europe trade.
