-Br. Edward Courtney, a former member of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, has been accused of sexually
abusing at least 55 boys over the course of nearly three decades. Br. Courtney reportedly worked at Sacred Heart in
New York, New York, from approximately 1957 to 1960. Despite the Christian Brothers allegedly knowing in the 1960s
of sexual abuse allegations against Br. Courtney, he was allowed to teach in Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, New York, and
Washington. Br. Courtney taught in three Chicago-area high schools including Rice High School, Leo Catholic High
School, and St. Laurence High School. It is alleged Br. Courtney sexually abused at least two minor students while
he worked at Leo High School. Br. Courtney also taught in Washington at O’Dea High School in Seattle, Our Lady of
the Lake School in Wedgewood, and was principal of St. Alphonsus Parish School in Ballard. In 1983, Br. Courtney
reportedly left the Christian Brothers and continued to work in public schools in Washington until accusations of abuse
began to surface. In 1988, Br. Courtney pleaded guilty to a felony indecent liberties charge and was sentenced to two
years’ probation. Br. Courtney’s charges stemmed from allegations of sexual contact with students while he worked
at a public junior high school in Othello, Washington. While Br. Courtney was a Christian Brother, he was sent to a
number of treatment facilities. He has also been named in numerous child sexual abuse lawsuits. At least one allegation
of child sexual abuse was made against Br. Courtney in the bankruptcy matter “In re: The Christian Brothers’ Institute,
et al.”, and he was named on the Archdiocese of Seattle’s “List of Clergy and Religious Brothers and Sisters for Whom
Allegations of Sexual Abuse of a Minor Have been Admitted, Established, or Determined to be Credible.” It is believed
that Br. Courtney is currently residing in Honolulu, Hawaii. His status as a priest and whether he has access to children
are unknown.
