Less than three weeks ago, America seemed to process and then, alarmingly, move on from the assassination of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. On Saturday, June 14, 2025, the couple were shot to death in their home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota—an attack Governor Tim Walz condemned as a “politically motivated assassination.”

In this video, Mother Jones’s ‪@GarrisonHayes‬ finds connections between the tragedy and one of the most charged culture‑war flashpoints in America—abortion. He delves into old committee hearings and other heated rhetoric to show that Hortman’s murder follows decades of hard‑line commentators doubling down on false narratives about abortion laws nationally—and in Minnesota in particular.

While the shooter’s exact motive remains under investigation, a recently resurfaced clip features the suspect, Vance Boelter, declaring: “The churches are so messed up, they don't know abortion is wrong, many churches."

Garrison also emphasizes a rising tide of political violence. Mother Jones colleague Mark Follman just spoke with former DHS official William Braniff, who warns that this kind of violence could get even worse.
