I thought about the credit card statement I’d glanced at earlier that week. A charge at a wine bar downtown I’d never heard of. I’d assumed client dinner. I thought about the way she’d started showering the second she got home instead of collapsing on the couch like she used to. I thought about how she’d begun guarding her phone like it was a second heartbeat, screen down, notifications silenced, smile too quick when I asked who was texting.

The fan squeaked again.

Sam shifted beside me, testing whether I was really asleep. Her hand hovered near my shoulder, then pulled back. That hesitation told me more than any confession would have. You don’t hesitate with someone you’ve been honest with.

I waited until her breathing evened out before I moved. Slipped out of bed. The floorboard by the dresser creaked—same one, every night—and I froze, listening. Nothing. She was already pretending to be asleep too, or maybe she really was. Either way, I didn’t need her awake for what came next.

In the kitchen, I opened her purse.

I’m not proud of it, but pride is a luxury you give up once trust starts leaking. Lipstick. Keys. A receipt folded small. Wine bar. Two glasses. Paid at 1:48 AM. I took a photo, timestamp visible, and slid everything back exactly as I found it. I checked the garage camera on my phone—something I installed after a break-in years ago and mostly forgot about. There she was, pulling in at 2:27, stepping out of the car alone. No proof of who’d been with her. Not yet.
