When I record music in my home studio, I like to mess around with creating lots of layers of home-made percussion.

For my new single "Time Has Always Been a Friend of Mine", after I recorded the main tracks (drums, guitars, vocals, bass etc) I recorded several tracks of simply making noise along to the song. I tapped the wall, hit the ceiling, stomped my foot on the floor, clicked my fingers, clapped, flicked a mug and made all kinds of random, rhythmic sounds. I then layered this across multiple tracks (in Logic Pro X), cut the bass frequencies so they wouldn't muddy the mix, and was really pleased with how they added more variety and depth to the song.

This short video isolates the 'percussion' tracks and shows how they sit in the mix. The song is nearly finished and I'll be releasing it soon!
