Indian Economic Updates : DRDO Unveils Indigenous 155mm Mounted Gun System, Boosting India’s Mobile Artillery Power

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has formally unveiled its fully indigenous 155 mm/52-calibre Mounted Gun System (MGS), marking a major milestone in India’s mobile artillery capabilities. Based on the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) and mounted on an 8×8 high-mobility platform, the MGS offers rapid shoot-and-scoot capability, transitioning from movement to firing within 80 seconds and redeploying in 85 seconds. With a maximum range of around 45 km, a burst firing rate of six rounds per minute, and the ability to carry 24 ready rounds integrated with the Battlefield Management and Control System (BMCS), the system significantly enhances battlefield agility and survivability.

Developed in just two and a half years by the Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) and transferred to Bharat Forge under DRDO’s Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) model, the nearly 30-tonne MGS is designed for operations across desert, mountainous and high-altitude terrains. Its performance has been validated through extensive trials at Balasore and Pokhran. Featuring over 80% indigenous content, each unit is estimated to cost about ₹15 crore—approximately half the price of comparable imported systems.

The MGS complements India’s broader artillery modernisation under the Field Artillery Rationalisation Plan, which includes the induction of 307 ATAGS towed guns under ₹6,900-crore contracts slated for completion by 2027, more than 200 truck-mounted artillery systems, and the ongoing deployment of Dhanush and Bharat-52 guns. In parallel, India’s expanding rocket artillery arsenal—led by upgraded Pinaka variants with ranges extending up to 300 km—further strengthens its long-range strike capabilities.

Drawing on operational lessons from the Ukraine conflict and Operation Sindoor, India’s evolving defence strategy emphasises network-centric warfare, indigenous production, and advanced munitions such as guided and ramjet-assisted artillery shells. The induction of the Mounted Gun System reinforces India’s self-reliant defence ecosystem, supports the “Make in India” initiative, and enhances the country’s standing as an emerging global power in artillery and land warfare systems.
