Divorces can get messy and muddy. But in samurai-ruled Japan, divorses were sometimes action-packed!

Between the 17th and 19th centuries, there were two temples in eastern Japan that served the role of family court, called 縁切り寺

縁切り means “severing ties.”
寺 means “temple.”

These temples were powerful sactuaries for women in a harmful marriage. Once the wife stepped a foot in the premises of the temple, they made the divorce happen. No matter what the husband said, samurai would surround his house and make him understand that things were final.

These temples had rules that said, “the arrival of any part of the woman including her wardrobe signified the beginning of legal procedures.”

So if a wife and husband were having an intense footrace, the wife would pull out the hairpin she once received from her now-regrettable choice of a husband and sling it towards the temple.

It lodged the wooden gate and the husband dropped to his knees. The chase was over and so was their marriage.

So nowadays, people who want to break up google “Most super saiyan Enkiri-dera, eastern Japan” 😂
