歌詞は民話に基づいている。このストーリーの中で、バスに乗っているヴィンゴという男が、4年の刑期を終え釈放されたと語っている。彼は妻に 彼なしで新しい生活を始めても良いと伝えた。彼の刑期中の最後の3年半の間、彼は彼女から連絡を受けていない。

彼が 彼女に送った最後の手紙で、次のように彼は彼女に指示した。『もし彼女が 彼を受け入れるなら、あの大きな樫の木に黄色いハンカチをつけるよう。そうすれば彼は バスを降り家に帰る。ハンカチが無いなら 彼を望まないということで、 二人のことは忘れ、彼はそのまま通り過ぎる』バスに乗車していた乗客たちは全員 その木に注目した。その木に到着したとき、たくさんのハンカチが木に結ばれており、このストーリーはとても幸せな結末となった。

この曲は 以前「ノックは三回」のNo.1ヒットを 書いたアーウィン・レヴィンとL.ラッセル・ブラウンが書いた。彼らは この話は素晴らしい歌になるだろうと思い、その物語を歌詞の基礎として使い、ハンカチを黄色いリボンに変えた。

The lyrics are based on a folk story. In the story, a man named Vingo riding a bus, who tells he was just released from prison after four years in jail. He told his wife that she could start a new life without him, and for the last three-and-a-half years of his incarceration, he didn't hear from her.

In his last letter to her, he gave her instructions. The story reads:There is a very famous big oak tree.
He told her that if she'd take him back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree and I'd get off and come home. If she didn't want me, forget it - no handkerchief and I'd go through.Everyone on the bus kept a lookout for the tree, and when they arrived, there were lots of handkerchiefs tied to it, giving the story a very happy ending.
This song was written by Irwin Levine and L. Russel Brown, who wrote the previous #1 hit for the group, “Knock Three Times”. They thought it would make a great song, so they used the story as the basis for the lyric, changing the handkerchief to a yellow ribbon.

This won Favorite Pop/Rock Single at the first annual American Music Awards in 1974. The song also got two Grammy nominations: Song of the Year and Best Pop Group Performance.
