You can have the contacts present in your android device to sync and backup in your gmail account.

1. Scroll down from the top of the screen to open the notification center.
2. Tap on the settings gear icon.
3. Select “Google”.
4. Select “Account services”.
5. Select Google contacts sync.
6. Select “Also sync device contacts”.
7. Now make sure to enable the option Automatically backup and sync device contacts.
8. Then you have to select one gmail account if you have more to sync all the contacts
9.Now all the contacts that are present in your device will be synced and saved to the gmail account.
10. Now this only applies to the contacts that are present in your device but if there are contacts that are saved in your SIM then this method will not work. In that case you have to import the contacts present in the SIM card to your gmail account.
11. For that one we will open the contacts application.
12. Tap on the menu option.
13. Scroll down and go to “Manage contacts”.
14. Select “Import/export contacts”.
15. Select “Import”.
16. Select SIM
17. Select All to select all the contacts.
18. Then select “Done”.
19. Now select the gmail account where you want to save the contact.
20. Then select “Import”.
21. Now the contact will be backed up in the gmail account.
