Overview of the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) and how scientists use state-of-the-art science and technology to better understand and forecast atmospheric river (AR) storms along the West Coast of the US. Because the vast majority of water in the Western US comes to us via precipitation from ARs, CW3E sought to develop research partnerships to help inform water management decisions. Over the past few years, these partnerships have helped water managers keep water in reservoirs that would normally have been released due to strict operating procedures and helped mitigate flood risk when a large AR, or family of ARs, is forecast to produce heavy reservoir inflow.
