The Karakoram Highway - 8th Wonder of the World

The other name of the Karakoram highway is N-35. This also called Pak China Friendship Highway. The Mighty Karakoram Highway is 1300km long starting from Hassan Abdal and enters into China via Khunjerab Pass where it becomes China National Highway 314. This Highway links Pakistani provinces Punjab, KPK, and Gilgit Baltistan to the Western Chinese province Xinjiang. This is one of the highest paved road of the world. The height of the Karakoram Highway is 15,500 feet above sea level. Due to its height and miraculous construction, it is also called as "8th wonder of the world".
The construction of the highway started in 1959 with the collaboration of Pakistan and China. After 20 years, in 1979 the highway was officially opened for the people. 810 Pakistani and 200 Chinese workers lost their lives during the construction. Mostly died because of landslide and falling from the cliffs. On the Pakistani side, the road was constructed by FWO (Frontier Works Organization) under the supervision of the Pak Army Corps of Engineers. Brigadier (R) M. Mumtaz Khalid has written a book on the construction of the highway and about the difficulties faced by workers namely "The History of Karakoram Highway" in 2 volumes.
The Karakoram highway is one of the famous highways for the tourists from Pakistan and from all over the world. The highway passes through many beautiful places and cities including Hawaiian, Haripur, Thakot, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Bagram, Basham, Patan, Sazin, Dasu, Chilas, Dinyur, Aliabad, Gulmit, Gilgit, Hunza, and Sust. It extends to Tashkorgan, Upal, and Kashghar city of China. Karakoram Highway is composed of beautiful Peaks, Valleys, Lakes, and Rivers. River Sindh and Attaabad Lake flow side by side. The Highest peaks of The Himalayas and Karakoram are also the companion of this road. i.e. K2, Rakaposhi, Nanga Parbat, and Dran.
Karakoram Highway is an exceptional work of modern engineering which lead to the construction fo such a beautiful paved toad in this grueling area. Due to the CPEC project, this Highway becomes the Jugular vein of Pakistan. CPEC is bringing foreign investments into the country and it will be play the role of the stair for the success journey of Pakistani economy. Karakoram Highway will remain the heart of this project.
