Canada these past few weeks has been in a state of conflict - over their opinion of the Ottawa Freedom Convoy. Truckers as well as citizens on foot gathered in the country’s capitol to protest the continuing and harshening of mandates (now two years into the pandemic). These rules have kept residents unable to travel, to hold employment, to participate in activities and more. Equally as devastating, these rules and the rhetoric that surround them, have provided a reason to discriminate. We’re seeing divisions like never before in Canada. The convoy’s purpose was to not only bring the public’s questions and concerns to parliament, but to bring unity to the population. These February 2022 rally days have been a bright light after years of darkness. People from all ages, races, interests, economic backgrounds, and v-statuses came together for one thing - to share love, Canadian pride and to exercise their rights as citizens of a democratic government. There was dancing, hockey playing, free & fresh food, bouncy castles, street cleaning, live music, speeches and much more. Participants honored the peace code set by the organizers, and it was beautiful. Trucks were adorned with drawings & letters of gratitude written by children, people sat to share the warmth of a stove and heartfelt stories. “I’ve made lifelong friends,” was heard in interview after interview. Much of the footage was documented by citizen’s with their cellphones and by independent news. MSM tells a different tale however. Edited clips and written script put this gathering through a broken funhouse mirror kaleidoscope - this is what was shared to home viewers. The convoy pieces the public saw and heard on their television was grossly bias and at times, blatantly wrong. The same goes for mainstream website and print media covering the weeks. Objectivity is out the window and that means those who were not there, or those who did not have the access or time to dedicate to researching this thoroughly, had no real chance to form their opinion about the rally’s aims. There are many layers of crisis that the pandemic has brought to the forefront. From what we see in our leaders, to our medical community, to big business, to what we see in media... JUST TO NAME A FEW.
