Описание к видео Social Practice and Community Engagement with The Wassaic Project

MFA Fine Arts presents artist, faculty member and assistant director of SVA Career Development Anna Ogier-Bloomer (MFA 2017 Digital Photography), who will talk with co-founders of The Wassaic Project, Eve Biddle and Bowie Zunino, about how their non-profit organization both provides opportunities to artists and supports the economic growth of rural New York. The Wassaic Project uses art and arts education to foster positive social change by nurturing connections between their artists and their neighbors, facilitating a mutual broadening of perspectives and respect across economic and cultural boundaries.

Opportunities for artists at TWP include summer and winter residencies (including one for parents), a summer exhibition and festival, a printmaking residency, performance opportunities, and more. In this discussion, Biddle and Zunino will present on these opportunities and how to get them, and they will discuss how they formed TWP, how they engage with their community and what artists should consider when starting their own organization. RSVP here.

From the founders:

We’re of and for Wassaic, not just in it. Our artists-in-residence live right in town. We work out of refurbished historic buildings. And we keep most of our festivals and exhibitions free and open to the public. Wassaic is our home, and that informs everything we do. This local work is our way of setting a national example for revitalizing rural areas. We believe that by supporting an international community of emerging artists, we support the economic development of our region.

Bowie Zunino, Eve Biddle and Jeff Barnett-Winsby are founders and co-executive directors of the Wassaic Project. They have curated performances at MASS MoCA, and spoken on panels at Open Engagement, Storm King, The Aldrich Museum, Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture and Planning and Preservation's Studio-X. The have also served as visiting artists and guest lecturers at Columbia University, Bard College, The City College of New York, Parsons and SVA. The Wassaic Project has been praised in The New York Times, Artforum, Nylon, Art F City and The Village Voice, among others.

Bowie Zunino is a social sculptor and teacher. She and her husband, Jeff Barnett-Winsby, run The Lantern in Wassaic, a community bar and restaurant, of which they live above with their two daughters. In collaboration with her husband, Joshua Frankel, she has created over 16,000 square feet of public murals across the country, to which Time Out New York says "make a beeline." She holds a BA in Art History from Williams College.
