In this MARESUNEX Seminar, we explore the complex relationship between the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes, their ancestral lands, and the mining industry. This session goes beyond technical assessments to discuss the historical trauma, ongoing environmental challenges, and the vital necessity of meaningful Tribal collaboration.

The Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation (DVIR) once freely occupied vast regions of Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon before their lands were seized. Today, the Tribes face a legacy of environmental damage from past mining—such as the contamination from the Mountain City mine—while navigating new pressures from the global demand for gold and critical minerals.

👤 Racheal Thacker: A member of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes and the Pesticide Coordinator/Solid Waste Technician for the Tribal Environmental Protection Program (TEPP). With a background in environmental compliance for major mining operations, Racheal brings a unique perspective on auditing, reclamation, and community health.

👤 Dr. Casey Bartrem: Executive Director at TerraGraphics International Foundation (TIFO). Casey works globally at the nexus of climate change and extractive industries, collaborating with Indigenous leaders and stakeholders to address environmental pollution impacting human health.
