The crested owl (Lophostrix cristata) is native to Central America and northern South America. In Costa Rica they are commonly called Buho Penachudo.

Their diet consists primarily of large insects, such as beetles, caterpillars and grasshoppers, however they will also feed on small vertebrates. They favour living in old growth forests, so habitat loss due to deforestation may have a significant impact on their population numbers in the future.

0:26 Two python millipedes (Nyssodesmus python), which are also known as large forest floor millipedes. They can grow up to lengths of 10-12 cm. The male will ride on the back of the female for long after mating, spending as much as 5 or 6 days straddling her back to prevent other males from fertilizing her eggs. The female may mate with other males despite this behavior.

They help recycle the nutrients of the forest by feeding on dead and rotting leaves, wood, and other detritus.

Despite combining these two species into one video, the python millipede is not part of the crested owl's diet. When threatened, the python millipede rolls up in a ball and secretes a fluid containing toxins such as hydrogen cyanide and benzaldehyde, thus deterring predation.
