Named after the flower which is commonly associated with love and affection and musically inspired by Richards’ experiences of parenthood, Ellen Beth Abdi performs the flute melody on “Carnation”, which was manipulated sonically and layered to create an almost-ethereal ensemble of flutes.

“When Robin told me this song was about becoming a father, I was able to excitedly relay to him that we had just had our very own Robin arrive (as of about 6 months now). There was an instant connection. “The timbres of Carnation inspired me to instill a little of ‘Perils From The Sea’ in this one, but
the lyrics are full of tenderness. It’s the makings of some advice to our new son, emerging in murmuring, half to him but mostly to myself, on the night shift.” - MF Tomlinson

“I discussed my original inspirations for Carnation with Michael, particularly the themes of fatherhood. He’d recently became a dad too so it really resonated with him. I love what he’s done on the track; the call and response of his vocals with the flute melody, and the additional layered harmonies.
