BENTONVILLE, Mo. -- Members of the Boy Scouts of America helped retire the American flag that has spent decades flying over Walmart's home office in Bentonville.

According to the VFW's website, the proper way to dispose of a worn out flag is to burn it, in a ceremony.

"It teaches them respect," Boy Scouts of America Troop 5 Scoutmaster Dwight Heasley said. "It teaches them about the people who came before them, who fought for the flag, who fought for our country, the blood they shed and the tears and our freedom."

But this flag is made of nylon, so burning it wasn't possible.

The boy scouts separated the blue star field from stripes, then the red and white stripes were separated, technically making it scraps that can be disposed of with respect.
