Interview with Ian Ferrao, Managing Director of Vodacom Tanzania discussing the challenges of getting customers in rural locations to adopt and embrace 3G broadband. He also sheds light on the costs vs. returns paradigm in the spread of 3G network in rural Tanzania, and emphasises the importance of offering relevant content and inexpensive handset devices to boost 3G penetration in rural Tanzania. This is the first tri-party operator national roaming agreement in sub Saharan Africa, it has now gone live in Tanzania with pilot sites, to test the commercial and technical sustainability of new rural 3G sites. The GSMA Connected Society team played a pivotal role in managing the overall project and supporting the mobile network operators in meeting their deliverables. Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia Systems were the chosen vendors for this project.
