Many people suffer from hair loss. Bald patches are often observed in sudden hair loss. Sometimes hair loss occurs in patches, while at other times, complete hair loss occurs.

Usually, this type of sudden and patchy hair loss is called alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which hair loss is very unpredictable. This condition can be observed at any age or in any gender.

Causes of Alopecia areata
1) Genetics.
2) Autoimmune diseases - In conditions like thyroiditis or vitiligo, there are chances of alopecia areata occurring.
3) Extreme stress can trigger alopecia areata.

Symptoms of alopecia areata
1) The most prominent symptom of alopecia areata is patchy hair loss.
2) If you start getting hair loss in round, coin-sized patches on your scalp and start getting bald patches, then you have high chances of getting alopecia areata.
3) The growth of beard or eyelashes can also get affected here.
4) The hair loss can be sudden or develop in some days or even over a few weeks.
5) Besides this, itching or burning sensation over the scalp can also occur.
6) Your nails can become roughened or thinned out or even split up.


Types of alopecia areata.
1) Localized alopecia areata.
2) Alopecia Totalis.
3) Alopecia Universalis.
4) Diffuse alopecia areata.
5) Ophiasis Alopecia.

Treatments for alopecia areata
1) Corticosteroids.
2) Minoxidil.
3) DPCP (Diphenylcyclopropenone)
4) Immunosuppressants.
5) Light therapy (photochemotherapy or phototherapy)
