In this special election (preview) episode of TecHype, we dive into a critical conversation with two powerhouse voices in American politics and policy: Robert Reich and Janet Napolitano. Together, they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, shedding light on how emerging technologies—particularly AI and digital media—are influencing democratic processes, economic stability, and national security.

Robert Reich—former U.S. Secretary of Labor, Time Magazine’s "Top 10 Best Cabinet Members of the 20th Century," and renowned author on American political economy—explores the challenges and opportunities AI presents for democracy. From the potential concentration of power among corporations to the effect of AI on job security and economic equity, Reich delves into what’s at stake for democratic institutions and the global economy.

Janet Napolitano—former Secretary of Homeland Security, Governor of Arizona, and the first woman to lead the University of California system—discusses the critical intersection of national security and technology. Drawing on her extensive experience, Napolitano highlights the challenges of cybersecurity, disinformation, and the need for international cooperation to protect democratic institutions. She also shares her perspective on California’s new AI Transparency Act and how the U.S. can proactively safeguard national security.

From addressing wealth inequality and digital equity to the balance of innovation and regulation, this episode is an in-depth look at how policymakers, tech leaders, and citizens can work together to navigate the evolving tech landscape.
