A Celtic handfasting ceremony is a symbolic ritual where a couple's hands are tied together to represent their commitment to each other. The tradition dates back to ancient Celtic times, and was especially common in Ireland and Scotland. During the wedding ceremony the couple stands face to face, clasps hands with wrists crossed over, and a cloth or ribbon is tied around their hands. The couple recites vows to each other. The crossed hands represent the infinity of their love. The cloth or ribbon symbolizes the binding together of their lives.

Traditionally, a rope or dyed cloth was used, but today couples can use a variety of materials, such as ribbons, fabric from heirloom dresses, or natural garland. Some couples choose to add charms to the end of the cord, like horseshoes, seashells, or beads.
