In spring, when you can see the new growth, it's a good time to divide ferns.
With these larger ferns I always use a sharp saw or knive to separate the growing points. Sometimes it can be quite a job and it will look like you're destroying the plant. But most ferns are really tough! They'll survive and thrive!
