At 11:23am on a cold June morning in 1952, a distress call crackled out from the Tp 79 Hugin, a Swedish DC-3 flying over the Baltic Sea. The voices on the line, sharp with panic, broke through the static: (QUOTE) “Under attack…” But the call was cut short by a burst of cannon fire. Seconds later, the unarmed research plane was torn apart. Flames streaked from its engines as it spiraled down, smoke trailing over the open sea. Eight men vanished in an instant.

Within hours, Sweden’s officials confirmed their worst fears; a Soviet fighter had taken down Hugin in an unprecedented Soviet aggression that threatened to escalate the Cold War.

Yet, instead of telling the public, they called it an accident. The truth of Hugin’s true purpose and more importantly, what it carried inside its hull was so sensitive no one could ever know. So they buried it. The reason their own airmen were lost would remain a secret.

But secrets can’t stay buried forever.
